A Lesser-Known Public Spot Near Pocono Pines

When our guests stay at the cottage, they often ask for recommendations for lesser-known public places near Pocono Pines where they can enjoy the outdoors without the crowds of the larger state parks. While the Poconos are famous for their major attractions, there are quiet, preserved landscapes nearby that offer a more intimate connection with nature. One of our favorite recommendations for a peaceful outing is the Austin T. Blakeslee Natural Area.

Located just a short drive from the cottage, this 130-acre natural area is a wonderful spot to experience the Poconos in their natural state. It is particularly enchanting in October, when the autumn foliage transforms the forest canopy into a vibrant display of gold, orange, and red. The area is centered around the scenic Tobyhanna Creek, which provides a soothing soundtrack as you explore the trails.

Exploring the Trails

The natural area features a network of trails that are perfect for a morning or afternoon hike. The terrain is varied, offering a mix of forest paths and creekside walking. You will find several distinct trails, including the Pine Trail, the Highland Trail, and the Creek Trail. These paths are generally considered easy to moderate, making them accessible for families and casual hikers looking to stretch their legs. The trails wind through hardwoods and pines, and you will often find yourself walking along large, flat rock slabs right beside the rushing waters of the creek. One of the highlights for many visitors is the view of Tobyhanna Falls, a small but picturesque waterfall that is especially lovely when the autumn rains increase the water flow.

Seasonal Considerations

October is a prime time to visit. The cooler temperatures make for comfortable hiking, and the harvest season brings a crispness to the air that is quintessentially Pocono. Because the trails can be natural and sometimes wet, we always recommend wearing sturdy, comfortable footwear. The roots and rocks along the paths can be slippery, especially with fallen leaves, so a walking stick can be a helpful companion for your trek. Remember to pack a light jacket, as temperatures can drop quickly once you step into the shade of the forest.

Quick planning notes

  • Location: 5491 PA-115, Blakeslee, PA
  • Cost: Admission is free to the public.
  • Time Commitment: Plan for 1 to 2 hours to comfortably hike the main loops and enjoy the waterfall views.
  • Rules: Leashed dogs are welcome. Please practice "leave no trace" principles to keep the area beautiful. Fishing is permitted in season with a valid Pennsylvania fishing license.
  • Accessibility: There are two parking areas serving the site, located just off Route

Local planning tip

Since the Austin T. Blakeslee Natural Area is located in a more secluded, natural setting, there are no restroom facilities on-site. We recommend planning a quick stop at a nearby business or the Tobyhanna Township area before you head out to the trails so you can enjoy your hike without interruption.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Austin T. Blakeslee Natural Area suitable for children?

Yes, the trails are generally easy and offer a great opportunity for children to explore nature, see the creek, and view the waterfall. We recommend keeping a close eye on little ones near the water's edge.

Can I swim in the creek?

While the area is beautiful, it is primarily managed for its natural state and hiking. We recommend sticking to the designated trails and enjoying the scenery from the banks rather than swimming.
